How often do you get to see a movie whose drama, such as it is, gets interrupted by a hairball? Kim Langille, the owner of a prize-winning white Turkish Angora named Bobby, has been a cat fancier for years. And my phone is full of cat photos – for Lucy’s Instagram, naturally. On the contrary, it manages to dig beneath the glitz and fur to reveal that competitiveness is ingrained in the human condition – even when it’s only our pride at stake.

Opens Friday (March 23) at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. What are the monetary costs of all this, particularly when it comes to grooming? Aaron Hancox and Michael McNamara’s documentary follows a season in the competitive world of Canadian cat shows, and nothing is too extravagant for these pet owners.

Though it has two competitors at its center, the film also includes interviews with other members of the cat show circuit, and they really add some joy to the film.

That failing, there’s also the fact that the Doc’s subjects are irresistibly docile, sweet and fluffy. What’s that all about? This is an expensive and time-consuming hobby for these folks.
