The CIHR Doctoral Research Award consists of two programs administered through a single application: Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Awards (CGS-D): Provides special recognition and support to students pursuing a doctoral degree in a health-related field in Canada. Given the specific requirements of certain disciplines, institutions are invited to contact the appropriate agency for guidance on the eligibility of programs of study. The faculty of graduate studies (or its equivalent) at each institution is responsible for coordinating the selection process for the CGS M applications. Indicators of research potential: As demonstrated by the applicant’s past professional and relevant extracurricular interactions and collaborations submit a maximum of one scholarship application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC *Refer to the Tri-agency research training award holder’s guide for details regarding part-time admission.

CIHR funds trainees at all levels – Masters, Doctoral, and Postdoctoral – in all health disciplines, including health professionals (clinicians, dentists, nurses, physiotherapists, and other health professionals) who are interested in pursuing health research. However, applicants can adjust this to any date prior to the application deadline.

Eligibility of Program of Study.

The OGPS Awards Committee reviews the applications and selects those that will be forwarded to the national competition.

There are three separate ranking committees, one for each agency, CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC. It is the responsibility of the applicant to regularly check the research portal between April 1 and January 31 for results of the competition.

The agencies aim to respond to inquiries within 48 hours.

Although the page for the institutional signatures is part of the signature page document, the institutional signatures are not actually required at the time of application. Smaller text in tables, charts, figures, graphs, and references (format at discretion of candidates) is acceptable, as long as it is legible when the page is viewed at 100%. CIHR cannot legally accept an application until the “Consent and Submit” task is completed on ResearchNet. The only signature that is required is the signature of your supervisor (see the Print/Upload Signature Pages instructions). These awards provide special recognition and financial support to students who are pursuing a Masters degree in a health-related field in Canada. You will not be able to submit your application to ResearchNet until all the required tasks are completed, including the letters from your sponsors. No later than Monday, November 23, 2020, 8:00 p.m.: McMaster will submit the selected applications to CIHR and inform the applicants of the internal results.
