Network devices (printers, switches, routers, etc) can have data recorded such as IP-Address, MAC Address, open ports, serial number, etc, etc. Spiceworks was cumbersome for me and it has issues with my antivirus software. You might want to have a look at Tideway. I personally use the GLPI, this software allows adding various plugins that increase its capacity, plus it’s open source.

Can you really afford not to know what's on your network ? Spiceworks most likely won’t make it as it needs to run on a Windows box. Great product for free.
