If you're a fan of the show or new to Phryne's world this is a great, fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. Red is the perfect colour for a covert jailbreak. CRIPPINS! 3.5 stars. I understand it was a genre thing and a nod to the comparable adventure films of the time, but for me it only served to frustrate the material. They really picked up nicely where the series left off. The film was dynamic, and for the most part, well paced. I'm a huge fan of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and I participated in the crowdfunding campaign, so I was a literal investor in this movie. Vibrant RED lipstick, always. I have even read some of the books and happily recommend both at every chance I get. Shirin Abbas was the key to an ancient mystery. I can forgive some of the bad visual effects because the budget was so low they needed multiple crowdfunding pledge drives to get this thing made but what I can’t forgive is a story that just doesn’t work. If you’re buying a ticket to Miss Fisher, you know what you’re in for, and rest assured that what you loved about the show will be served up to you on a gleaming silver platter polished by Mr Butler. It ran for 3 years, airing 32 episodes on the ABC and getting a spin-off, Ms. Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, in 2019.The show itself was a decent hit by Australian standards and got average reviews throughout its run. I thought the actress who played Shirin Abbas was very compelling as were the brief flashbacks to the women in the Bedouin village in Palestine. Jonathan’s brother Lord Lofthouse (Daniel Lapaine) and his sister-in-law Lady Lofthouse (Jacqueline McKenzie) were up to their necks in debt and hoping to make a railroad deal with Kahlil. I love the era and clothes! Sure, it's cheesy and the punny repartees are on the nose, but that's part of the enjoyment. And unfortunately, The Crypt of Tears doesn't quite rise to the occasion. In their quest to find out what happened to Shirin’s family, Miss Fisher and Jack (Nathan Page) stumble onto ancient artefacts, an ominous curse and long buried secrets, all while sizzling on screen with that undeniable chemistry. I won't be in any rush to watch the TV series! I wasn’t looking for blockbuster, just a continuation of Miss Fisher’s escapades as a female detective. Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2020.
Phryne had the inscription translated by her good friend Professor Linnaeus (John Waters). Which is a shame because I think they did so with noble intentions and it was a labour of love. There’s nothing to invest in beyond a tepid relationship built on anger and banter and that’s basically it. No one has believed her story – including her now London-based uncle Sheikh Kahlil Abbas (Kal Naga) – except Miss Fisher who promises to help.
The second emerald was big enough to skateboard on and carried a curse.
She is devil-may-care, beautiful, intelligent and witty. This movie plays pretty much like an extended episode of the "Miss Fischer" TV series.
