He gained a foothold on Earth's newly created surface and fell into battle with his brethren, which lasted all through Earth's early history. It was during this lonesome period that Melkor began to have ideas and designs of his own that were not in accordance with his fellow Ainur. right now, it seems like people are going off of assumptions and not feats.
Thanos is a beast, too. Death began as a gift to humans from Illuvatar, allowing them to seperate from the world & go to astral parts unknown (possibly Eru's original inhabitance, where the Valar dwelled before coming to Valinor as Ainur), which elves cannot do as they are bound to it eternally. just curious, dc moons are stronger than marvel moons but LOTR is just hard to compare having low feats and all.
While the Valar were unsure where the Children of Iluvatar would awake, they were reluctant to wage war against Melkor, fearing the clash of powers might result in massive collateral damage. Melkor was in the beginning an Ainu created by Eru in the Timeless Halls.
Sauron's little crusade on earth was ignored by Vala (And sent maiar instead), while they waged a full fledged war against melkor in his weakest form. Melkor is everything sauron will ever dream of being. Can someone clue me in? Occasionally people referred to him as Belegurth, The Great Death, a perversion of Belegur, the Sindarin form of Melkor.
@leito: @princearagorn1: Well first of all Illuvatar didn´t sing he only lifted his hand and then music came...lazy fella. Upon fleeing back to Middle-earth, he rebuilt Angband as his center of operations, and reared the tallest mountains to have ever been in Middle-earth, the Thangorodrim, over its gate. 1.
The name Melkor was never spoken again. Morgoth Bauglir ([ˈmɔrɡɔθ ˈbau ɡlir]; originally Melkor) is a character, one of the godlike Ainur, from Tolkien's legendarium. He is the main antagonist of The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin, and The Fall of Gondolin, and is mentioned briefly in The Lord of the Rings. That is also basically as I remember it. So yeah....looks like Thanos takes it...again. Gothmog is supposed to be the strongest but is having almost no feats. If so, he seems like a star buster at best....which would put Thanos far above him.
He's literally immortal, and had to BFR'd out of the universe after he lost his power.
Naming it Utumno he built it behind the Iron Mountains (Ered Engrin) in the far north of Beleriand.
So Melkor and Illuvatar are on the same level? During the creation and shaping of Arda, Melkor thwarted the efforts of the other Valar, marring the world, and while the Valar started to build their kingdom of Almaren Melkor corrupted many of the Ainur First, he dwelt in The Void outside Ea at the beginning of the World, but he later built a new underground fortress in the north of Middle-earth. Melkor threatened Hurin that all Hurin loved would be rendered extinct with Melkor's evil thoughts, and wherever they went, evil would transpire.. And so Húrin stayed was chained atop Thangorodrim, forever watching his homelands fall under the shadow of Morgoth until he releases him.
@darkraiden: Melkor at full power can create is own themes. The Valar captured him and thrust him through the Door of Night bound in a great chain, Angainor. He's litterally undeafetable except for an omnipotent being, which Thanos is not. Melkor handed some of his powers to Sauron to corrupt and govern Earth, but Sauron was not defeated until some 3500 years after Melkor's defeat. And that´s why Melkor twisted Illuvatars creations because he was unable to create on his own but was only able to manipulate what was already there.
This is an unfortunate side-effect of using certain characters from Middle Earth in fights.
Also, what with being from different universes and all, Thor isn't a god in the same way Melkor is.
Both Angband and Utumno were razed, and Melkor brought back in chains.
I'm going for melkor and the rest of the team too. After this point, Fëanor titled him Morgoth meaning Dark Enemy in Sindarin. As the Dark Lord he was superhumanly tall, and covered in dark storm clouds and a dark powerful aura which humbled all who saw him. At last Melkor was brought before the Valar to be judged. relatively (vine doesn't work that way so if you don't go by that theory yes thanos should win), 2) Why ? Still Thanos, and no, Melkor definitely does not solo.
3. In weaker of his forms, he destroyed the trees of sun and moon. They simply repeat what's already done by toaa. Full of shame Melkor secretly harbored great anger and thus began his rebellion. I thought the team made it fairer because in another thread pretty much everyone said Thanos beats Melkor easily. @stompa: I don't recall Eru actually singing, though.
Long story short, Melkor is Tolkiens Devil and just because they both are named gods doesn't mean you can compare them.
He doesn't atleast not without his items, and when Melkor is on his hight of his powers. Ashamed, Melkor withdrew, but when Iluvatar showed the Valar His new creation: Earth, Melkor longed to possess it.
I've only been here a while myself. The latter took part in the creation of the world/universe, which is a lot more impressive than your average Thor feat. Until then, going Thanos tentatively.
To the Valar he seemed to have changed and mellowed such that Manwe, Lord of the Valar, ordered his chains removed. Túrin, who was valiant and powerful, nearly escaped the curse, as feared by Morgoth, but could not leave it. I think it´s the other way around.
@hulkman123 1) It doesn't make him featwise but my point is (and i can't speak for tolkien) he is supposed to be the number two in every universe you put him in. All characters are at the height of their powers, without any objects, e.g. Eru created melkor, and he has a part of his will.
Turgon narrowly escaped the clutches of the host of orcs due to the valor of Húrin and Huor and their men.
@thanofleeze: Not really.
Melkor never created his own theme he was simply singing "wrong" to piss of Illuvatar because he was a brat. And odin recreating whole galaxies is still propably above creating one world. I have only read the german version of the Simarillion but if the translation isn´t totally stupid then that´s simply not true.
And then witch Balrog?
Finally, in the War of Wrath, Angband was destroyed and, though Morgoth tried to call up more and more beasts of the shadows to aid him, he was eventually defeated by the mighty Host of Valinor.
As was noted in a previous answer the cosmology is completely Morgoth, once named Melkor, is the highest-ranking villain in the universe of the Lord of the Rings, the primary antagonist of the Silmarillion and the master and predecessor of Sauron, in-turn eponymous primary antagonist and the true devil of The Lord of the Rings History.
Nevertheless, they were all deceived, and Melkor continued to wage war against them, destroying the Trees of the Valar with his ally Ungoliant (the first Giant Spider of Middle-earth) and stealing the gemstones known as the Silmarils.
First the ainur were singing their song creating an image of a world instead of a real one.
And eru didn't create the world, he simply made the themes iirc. Morgoth, once named Melkor, is the highest-ranking villain in the universe of the Lord of the Rings, the primary antagonist of the Silmarillion and the master and predecessor of Sauron, in-turn eponymous primary antagonist and the true devil of The Lord of the Rings History. But if you put them in perspective Melkor should be stronger because only Illuvatar (Tolkiens TOAA) could beat him and possibly Tulkas although I doubt if he could do it permanently. Thats why I stated in my first post that Thanos with IF gauntlet could beat him because he would than be on the level of Iluvatar.
Thanks for clarifying that.
Unfortunately, all but Húrin fell after the onslaught of Morgoth's forces. Thangorodrim was adorned with walls and gates, and functioned as a guardian fortress to Angband proper, which was underground. His "will" is spoken of as an active force in the world, tempting and urging in thought, and sometimes in phantom manifestation; and it is foretold that at the end of the world, his old strength will come back to him, that he will overcome the guard upon the Door, and reenter Arda. I fail to see the relevance of him being 2nd most powerful in Tolkien's universe.... unless it makes him comparable with Marvel's number 2, LT? I see him tanking a average hit from marvel ultimate thor.
All of the creation done in LOTR-verse is done by Illuvatar (except the dwarfs but i won´t go into that) and even that is only one world so it pales against what is even considered skyfather in Marvel.
His quest was vain for he found not the Flame Imperishable for it lies with Eru alone.
When the Ainur sung the Great Music before Eru, Melkor attempted to take it over and wove into it his own chords of vanity.
Desiring to create great things of his own and knowing of but not understanding the Flame Imperishable, Melkor often went forth into the Great Void outside of the Timeless Halls in search of this flame. He knows a lot of his thoughts, too. But no being in LOTR is on the same level as Eru.
