I packed way too heavy anticipating taking three days to complete. Technical climbing skills aren't required to reach the summit, though the route should only be attempted by fit and able hikers. Part of the popularity of this trail includes its gateway status for numerous other backcountry hikes, including the always inviting Mount Margaret backcountry. The trail is steep at certain sections, and for an easier alternative and kid-friendly hike nearby, the half-mile Eruption Trail also departs from the Johnston Ridge Observatory.

Make sure to bring plenty of water as there are no water sources. But I have hiked in a similar area before and saw a black bear on the trail that would not leave the trail, so if you have dogs that want to get into the bushes and just be dogs beware, they may jump a bear out of it sleeping area.

Locally these are climbs such as Mount Defiance , Table Mountain, Dog Mountain, and Hamilton Mountain to name a few. You’ll find information on hundreds of dog friendly hiking trails in St. Helena here. I hesitate to give any climb of a Cascade Volcano a less than 5 star rating because they are all unique and spectacular.
Would highly recommend having a head lamp so your hands are free.
