The response of the messenger to Fëanor is just that; a response.
Even so, Tolkein explicitly states that when the Valar go on to assault Melkor at Utumno for the sake of the Elves, they themselves do not believe they have any chance of besting him as they remember him from his glory days: Melkor must be made far more powerful in original nature (cf. Right, that’s why I asked when the quote was made in relevance to his status as a Valar. Then they promised him that he should be released and restored to Eilinel, if he would yield; and being at last worn with pain, and yearning for his wife, he faltered. Thor Odinson is the Asgardian God of Thunder and the son of Odin, the All-Father of Asgard, and Gaea, the Elder Earth-Goddess.
That question's a bit too vague. I was just making a point. Melkor arrives at Formenos and speaks to Feanor and Finwe. Keep in mind, Melkor is superior to any singular Vala and can contend against all 14 of them at once: Later, he(Melkor) must not be able to be controlled or 'chained' by all the Valar combined.
If you take tolkiens side notes seriously, as to my knowlage this never made it into the final draft. (Morgoth's Ring). Finwe sends messengers to Manwe. So what are they?

I have been reading through the Silmarillion and I notice that many of the first age heroes and villians are much more powerful than the heroes and villians in the 3rd age. (1) (He was to make I devise I begin; Manwe (a little less great) was to improve, carry out, complete.)
@reikai: my point stands , the dragonborn never challenge them for power , not even after he defeats alduin . But the Temple itself was unshaken, and Sauron stood there upon the pinnacle and defied the lightning and was unharmed; and in that hour men called him a god and did all that he would. You mean the guy who was supposed to have killed his clan by himself but actually had help and was good all along (and also a brocon)? (The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Ch 3, Of The Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor), Along with this, he destroyed the 2 lamps, said to be loftier then mountains: "But Melkor... assailed the lights of Illuin and Ormal, and cast down their pillars and broke their lamps. Thor on the other hand, has feats, such as drinking part of the sea, lifting Jormungandr almost to the sky, beating and outlasting Old Age, destroying a mountain with three blows or so, and killing lots of giants. He definitely isn't. Il apparaissait toujours avec une arme à la main. Still I agree, he scared Sauron shitless and was Manwe's strongest Maia. C'est un grand guerrier, il raffole des batailles et sa particularité est de rire au combat. Melkor on Arda was significantly weaker then he was as a God. A random moment me and Tulkas had one day while playing Two Cities. and one is simply not serving them if he is more powerful or if he could easily overthrow those old gods .the best he can hope for in this match up is to replicate fingolfins feat of inflicting minor wound before going down against wastly diminished version of melkor .prime melkor curbstomps .

He was to a stupidly vast degree above every other Valar, who were individually probably about low-mid end continent level by feats and there were about fourteen of them. It wasn't a stalemate, they flat out could not beat him at all, it was more that he couldn't undo their works faster than they could make them so that aspect was a stalemate. Dès la première guerre du monde, la haine de Melkor envers Tulkas ne s'éteignit jamais. He has great versatility, and can clear most if not all street and lowtier with min trouble, and even clear through a large amount of mid tier, but at a certain point his damage output falls flat. I would be okay with this being a copypasta for every Dragonborn thread ever. He wasn't really considered a Valar by any accounts anymore after his betrayal, even in retrospect. He was a hardy friend and slow to wrath, but also slow to forgive.
@Aristeaus: if there was an omnipotent god in our world then the strongest and smartest human would be considered second to god, you don’t scale second to god from god you scale him up to the person who displayed the best feats if he doesn’t have his own.
